The Stainless Steel Office

To design the interior spaces, enhance the façade elements for Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) & Arttdi’nox in Gurgaon.

While the architecture of this iconic office was conceptualized by Morphogenesis, ABM was asked to augment its aesthetic and design the interior office spaces.

Location: Gurgaon, India

Completed: 2020

Total Area: Interior: 70,000 sq. ft. Plot: 45,000 sq. ft.40000 sq. ft.

Design Team: Yogesh Kachole, Shweta Gurav, Sageer Muckba and Ahmed Ali

At first glance, the exterior of the building is a conventional glass building with an external courtyard space at the entrance. JSL being one of the largest stainless-steel manufacturers, ABM developed a radical intervention on the entrance columns by cladding them with stainless steel in a faceted form. This adds a wow! factor and introduces the key material, stainless-steel, as part of the exterior.

In this external courtyard, working with the Landscape Architect, Savita Punde, we introduced two custom design Arttdi’nox sculptures to showcase the company’s expertise.

The steel fire staircase was introduced later. This stair runs down the front of the building and distracts from the façade. ABM has cleverly integrated the staircase with a ‘shimmer screen’ and used it as an advantage to redefine the facade form and aesthetic. This screen comprises of steel panels fixed from the top and loose at the bottom. As the wind blows the panels of the screen move with the wind, reflecting the sunlight falling on them and creating a shimmering effect. The screen casts shadows on the interior making the experience of walking down a simple fire staircase into an unreal experience.

This scale and complexity of all the stainless-steel fabrication was a first for JSL and ABM.

The interior spaces were designed to be efficient and maximize seating. The ground floor has common spaces such as the cafeteria, boardroom, training center etc. It also has a directors’ reception space designed with wooden paneling, broken by a faceted stainless-steel ceiling mounted sculptural element. Custom stainless-steel seating was designed and fabricated by ABM.

Each office floor has a shared reception space with a custom designed stainless-steel table, along with space for workstations and meeting rooms, each defined by a color.

The top floor of the building is reserved for the directors’ cabins, visitor’s lounge, boardroom, directors’ lounge, studio spaces and the Arttdi’nox office. This floor has a distinct design aesthetic, setting it apart from the common office. The marble on the floor is a striking greyish-white paired with a fluted glass and wood paneled corridor. The design studio and display shelves showcase all the stainless-steel products retailed by Arttdi’nox. A skylight above the workstation space allows natural light to filter into the center. Each of the directors’ cabins is designed to reflect the ethos of its user. An open to sky courtyard between two cabins houses a Subodh Gupta sculpture set against a green wall.

The graphics of this office are exclusive and tailored to the space. ABM partnered with Aashti Miller from Miller Ink to create unique designs for the blank walls. These include the angular stainless-steel lit boxes behind the reception table, the axonometric of the letters J S L, a timeline of the company, exploded axonometric of stainless-steel products, word clouds, photo collages and many more.
